We bring the rarely explored flavors of Northern Iran to San Francisco—a sweeter, more rustic culinary tradition that even seasoned Persian food lovers discover for the first time at our table.
A Journey Rooted In Northern Iran
Komaaj began in 2015 as a passion project created by Executive Chef Hanif Sadr, who wanted to introduce the rich culinary traditions and family recipes of Northern Iran to the Bay Area. What started as a series of intimate pop-up dinners evolved into a restaurant experience shaped by the flavors, aromas, and gathering traditions of the Caspian Sea region and the surrounding Alborz Mountains.
An Experience Beyond The Plate
At Komaaj, the goal has always been larger than simply serving food. Through dining, catering, specialty products, and curated experiences, the restaurant continues to explore the layered flavors and traditions of Northern Iranian cuisine. From mazze-style dinners and platter-style dishes to regional wines and house-made sharbats, every detail is designed to create a memorable and deeply rooted cultural experience.
From Pop-Ups To The Bernal Heights Table
At our Mission/Bernal Heights location in San Francisco, Komaaj brings together casual daytime rice bowls and wraps with evening mazze dinners meant for sharing over wine and conversation. The experience continues to evolve through special dinner series inspired by Chef Hanif’s original pop-up events, inviting guests to slow down, gather together, and take part in the story behind Komaaj.
